Botany knowledge

An email to a colleague:

I am totally committed to helping out and I can 100% relate to being in the field alone wondering about plant ID. I just finished the The Omnivore’s Dilemma by Micheal Pollan. He goes on and on about how really “knowing” if it safe to eat wild mushrooms is a confidence that can only be gained by learning from a person who has eaten and survived.

I feel this same way about plant identification. My confidence can be only so high without a second opinion. Some might call this extroverted behavior, but I think it is humility. Overconfidence is a problem in all scientific disciplines. I can be your second opinion on exotic plant species in Colorado. I think I know them all. 🙂

Thanks,
Maggie
